MBTA Triangle Committee

MBTA Triangle Moves Along

It’s been a long time coming, but the Cordaville MBTA triangle may finally get some improvements. For several years now since the MBTA built their parking lot south of the tracks a triangular piece of land that was purchased for the town by the MBTA gone from ragweed and brushy eyesore to what it is today. There are a few tree plantings and mowed grassy area. As many Cordaville and Southville residents know, this piece of land is the welcome point to town for people traveling North on Route 85 from Hopkinton.

The MBTA Triangle Committee was formed several years ago under appointments from the Southborough Selectmen. The group has worked with the Conway School of Design and input from area residents to develop a plan that will incorporate the historic aspect of the Cordaville Woolen Mill and the old Blacksmith shop. Neither remain in one piece today, however, the town’s historical Society does have the bell that was in the clock tower of the mill and parts of the Blacksmith foundation are within reach under the current soil. Because the triangle is the centerpiece and “welcome mat” to Southborough, plans also incorporate an entrance/welcome sign and focal point of the nearly one third acre property. Other areas will have open grassy field/meadow with pathways, seating areas and tree plantings.

Last night five design The first group presenting was Berkshire design group from Northampton, MA; Ray Dunetz Landscape Architecture of Boston; CBA Landscape Architects of Somerville; Carolyn Cooney Associates of Milford, MA and Bartsch and Radner Design, Inc of Boston, MA. All prospective Landscape designers brought in their projected rendering of the MBTA Triangle project. Several had even scoped out the project to various costs associated with a variety of materials that could be used on the project. The format for the night was a fifteen minute presentation followed by a fifteen minute question and answer period from the Cordaville MBTA Triangle Committee. After all the presentations were made, the committee then discussed the pros and cons of each Design team’s presentations. The group then went into their selection process. They will give the Selectmen who will have the final say in the decision the name of the Design firm that the group would like to use.

Southborough Historical Society Museum

The Southborough Historical Society asked for monies for repairs to the historic Southborough Flagg School which houses the Town's museum and historic artifacts.  With the monies that passed at this years Annual Town Meeting the project will fund for rebuilding of the side steps, repairs to the windows to keep them in historic perspective, install a HVAC system, tear down and rebuild the chimney, painting and trim work.  The Recreation Department recently moved out of the Flagg School to the Southborough Art Center, therefore giving the Historical Society more room for their exhibits.
